To Glorify God
A Gospel Man …
- Glorifies God in everything he does.(1 Corinthians 10:31; Revelation 4:11; Colossians 3:17; 1 Peter 4:11 )
- Values the cultivation of his mind and diligently seeks after wisdom and knowledge. (Proverbs 22:17-21; Proverbs 2:2-6; Romans 12:2)
- Realizes his imperative need to allow the Holy Spirit to control his emotions and expressions of them. (James 1:19-20)
- Seeks to make God his number one desire and the Lover of his soul, knowing that only He can fully satisfy. (Psalm 73:25; Psalm 63:1)
- Loves Jesus and keeps his commands. (John 14:15; 1 John 5:3; 2 John 1:6)
To Pursue A Lady
A Gospel Man ...
- Holds her purity before marriage sacred and will not compromise it for anything. (1 Timothy 5:22; Hebrews 13:4; Matthew 5:28)
- Does not relate to members of the opposite sex in a flirtatious or forward manner, but instead saves all his passion for his future wife. (Thessalonians 4:3-8; Proverbs 6:25-29)
- Uses his years of singleness to seek and serve God without distraction, and is content to leave the details of his future to Him. (Psalm 73:25; Philippians 4:11)
- Spends his life perfecting the pursuit of one woman and cherishing and loving her (Proverbs 5:18; Ecclesiastes 9:9; Matthew 19:5)
- He loves her the way Christ loves the church and the way he loves himself. (Ephesians 5:25; Ephesians 5:28; Ephesians 5:33)
- Pursues understanding her and honoring her, never harsh, with a long view of the future together. (1 Peter 3:7; Colossians 3:19)
To Raise Children
A Gospel Man ...
- Knows the way a child is to be trained, and does not hesitate in that training. (Proverbs 22:6)
- Does not shame himself by leaving a child to himself (Proverbs 29:15)
- Does not withhold discipline (Proverbs 23:13; Proverbs 13:24)
- Teaches his children diligently (Deuteronomy 6:7)
- Views his children as a blessed heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127:3)
- Does not provoke or frustrate his children. (Titus 2:7; Ephesians 6:4)
To Live in Community
A Gospel Man ...
- Does not wallow in self-pity or make a habit of voicing complaints, but radiates cheerfulness and joy. (Proverbs 15:15; Proverbs 17:22)
- Is trustworthy and gains the respect of those around him. (Colossians 3:9-10)
- Restrains himself from listening to, or participating in gossip, but instead speaks with wisdom and discretion. (Proverbs 11:12-13, 22; Proverbs 20:19; Proverbs 3:11)
- Encourages and builds up those around him instead of criticizing and tearing them down. (1 Thessalonians 5:11; Ephesians 4:29)
- Does not have a domineering, contentious, angry or violent manner in which he deals with others. (1 Peter 5:3; James 3:8-10; Psalm 37:8 )
- Is not simple or lacking in sense in his speech or actions but is characterized by a gentle and courteous spirit. (Proverbs 9:16; Proverbs 7:7; Titus 3:2)
- Opens his hand to the poor and reaches out his hand to the needy, investing eternally. (Proverbs 19:17, Luke 12:33-34; Luke 11:41 )
To Make War
A Gospel Man ...
- Knows when it is time to go to war, always as the defender, never as the oppressor. (Ecclesiastes 3:8, Psalm 68:5; Deuteronomy 10:18; Jeremiah 22:3; James 4:1-2)
- Particularly pursues justice for widows and orphans. (James 1:27; Psalm 68:5; Exodus 22:22-24; Proverbs 22:9)
- Realizes the greatest war is the one in his heart. (Romans 7:23; 2 Corinthians 10:4; Galatians 5:16-18; John 15:4-5)
- Guards and trains his mind, heart, and body for godliness. (Romans 8: 5-7; Romans 12:2; Galatians 5:24; 1 Timothy 4:7-8)
- Engages daily in spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:12; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5; 1 Peter 5:8)
- Is increasingly and intimately familiar with the armor and weapons of God. (Ephesians 6:10-18; 1 Thessalonian 5:8; Hebrews 4:12)
- Always pursuing gentle love, respect, and peaceful reconciliation. (1 Peter 3:15; Romans 16:20; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8; 1 Corinthians 16:4; 2 Corinthians 5:8)
